Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend Book Review

I received this copy from Trapeze Books in exchange for an honest review. I have given Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend five out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book Description (via Goodreads): A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world — but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination. Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she’s blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks — and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor. It’s then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city’s most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart — an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests — or she’ll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate. Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.

In the Book Description from Goodreads where it says “Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.”. It’ll most likely appeal to a new generation but it definitely appeals to the old one too! This middle grade book had me turning pages for this incredibly written fantasy, magical novel quicker than I have done in a long time for this genre.

I absolutely loved this book! I loved that it was about finding yourself and friendship (along with all the cool adventures in between). I’m a complete sucker for a book about a competition/trials so this book was definitely for me. Townsend keeps you guessing throughout the book especially with the trials as, although you learn what the trials are called, you have no clue what they’re really about until later on.

I had such a clear imagination on the world of Nevermoor, thanks to Townsend’s descriptive writing, I could picture all the events happening and couldn’t help but hope that maybe one day this will be turned into a film or series, that would be great! I don’t want to give too much away so I won’t go into detail about the characters etc, that will be for your own eyes to read and find out about.

I’m so excited for the second book in the series to come out, but also very impatient as I want to read more about Nevermoor as soon as possible, it’s such an interesting, magical place full of secrets and mystery.

I’d definitely recommend the first book in this series to fans of the Harry Potter and The Hunger Games Books. For fans of fantasy, adventure and mystery.

Happy reading,

Claire📚
