Book Description (via Goodreads): Pay close attention and you might solve this. On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose? Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
I have given One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus five out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Well, what can I say? This fast-paced YA contemporary mystery novel was everything that I wanted in a book! I was honestly expecting more of The Breakfast Club vibes to this book, but I wasn’t mad when I figured out that wasn’t the route the author was going for however, I was sucked into this book right from the beginning and was very excited to see how this book was going to play out.
A multiple POV book from all of the students who are being questioned due to the murder? Fantastic! I love a book with multiple POVs, being able to get an insight to all four of the students lifestyles always keeps the guesses flowing especially when it’s a detective, mystery type novel where you’re trying to find out who the killer is. I thought McManus did a great job of developing the characters well, although a little too well as I would really love to follow more stories with these four main characters as I loved how they were all so different. Like the front cover of the book says: A Geek. A Jock. A Criminal. A Princess. Four completely different characters whom I grew to love each of them in their own way.
I really liked McManus’ writing, I found it very entertaining, fast-paced and suspenseful. I love when an author is able to completely transform you into the world that they’ve created, I felt like I was part of the investigation which I loved. McManus has that writing flare which I knew after reading the first chapter that I would enjoy it throughout. The plot twists that occur in this book had my head darting left and right, just when you believe you’ve figured it out and you feel like you’ve just qualified as a #1 detective everything flips and you’re back to square one. This book kept me guessing throughout, I kept changing my mind on who I thought was the suspect due to the story’s events we unravel as we start to piece information together. At one point I had a thought and inkling who the real suspect was but I swiftly moved on to thinking it was someone else. I was still on the edge of my seat until the Epilogue of the book.
I’m really excited to delve into the other two books I currently own of Karen M. McManus’ (The Cousins comes out in December, I can’t wait!). I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy YA mystery, contemporary and suspenseful stories.
